For the Glory

I was talking to one of my co-workers recently. It seems Cassie and her family had just seen Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. She told me that even though she had really enjoyed the movie, she had one small problem with it.

"And what was that?" I asked, fully expecting to hear a complaint about the film's plot or the humor. I was a little surprised to hear her response.

"It's my stupid brother," she replied. "Ever since we watched the movie, he keeps calling me Jetfire!"

When I heard that, I couldn't help but flinch slightly. Cassie and Jetfire share a physical trait in common; when Cassie was younger, she needed surgery on her legs. Thanks to the operations, she can walk but she has a noticable limp and needs the assistance of a cane. It was pretty obvious why her brother would make such a comment.

But then it struck me: being nicknamed Jetfire may not be such a bad thing. Especially when you consider his character.

"He's calling you Jetfire?" I said. "That's pretty awesome, actually. Remember how cool he was?" She thought it over for a moment and agreed.

To say Jetfire was cool is really an understatement. For all intents and purposes, he was at a major disadvantage as compared to the other Cybertronians. They were younger and in much better physical condition, while he was ancient and had trouble walking.

But that didn't stop him. When he needed to kick skidplate, he kicked it and did a much more impressive job of it than some of his younger counterparts. And when duty called on him to make the ultimate sacrifice, he did so willingly. He owed this planet and our species nothing, yet Jetfire gave his life to protect us. He is, in a word, a hero.

When I think about it, Cassie's a bit like him. She comes in, does her job and doesn't complain about it. She cracks jokes with customers and associates alike and almost always has a smile on her face. She's a real trooper. I'd say she's earned the nickname and represents it honorably.

I can't help but be a little jealous of her. How often do you meet someone who's nicknamed for a hero and has earned the name so well?
